Course Description: MGMT 630E Democratic Governance & Board Dynamics
Effective governance is the defining challenge of any member-owned organization. This course focuses on the practical and interpersonal mechanics of "One Member, One Vote." Students will learn to design governance structures that ensure accountability while maintaining operational efficiency. Emphasis is placed on managing the delicate relationship between a democratically elected Board of Directors and professional management, ensuring that member voices remain central to the organization’s strategic direction.
About the Program
Traditional MBA and MPA programs focus on shareholder primacy and hierarchical corporate structures, leaving leaders unprepared for member-governed organizations. The Master of Arts in Management: Cooperative Management & Organizing bridges business administration, public advocacy, and contemplative leadership. Students master dual-bottom-line financial management, democratic decision-making, and grassroots coalition building to steer sustainable, community-centered enterprises.
The MA in Management: Cooperative Management & Organizing is a 36-credit, two-year master’s degree delivered in an accessible online format. Coursework is structured across four 9-credit semesters, combining synchronous and asynchronous online study with real-world, community-embedded practice. During their second year, students complete a hands-on field internship and capstone project with an active cooperative, credit union, housing collective, or advocacy organization.
